Date Night with my Daughter and Ellie Goulding

I took my 7 yr old daughter to her first concert this past weekend! We saw Ellie Goulding perform on the Delirium Tour.

This is an album we love to jam to and when I heard she was coming to Miami, I immediately bought us tickets!

Here’s some of the fun from the night. Loved Ellie’s performance and loved the quality time with my lil gal! We danced the entire time we were there!

My sweet girl was pretty tired by the last few songs. After a long day of school and the chaos of the concert, 10 pm was just too late for her. She fell asleep as soon as we got in the car.

Such a fun night! One of the best and most meaningful adventures I’ve had with my daughter. ❤️

My best friend’s wedding

I finished spending the weekend in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for my best friend’s wedding. And I had a fabulous time! What a change of pace from my recent travel to Europe

We stayed at an all-inclusive resort on the beach. Wedding took place there, too, so all the action was in one spot.

We ate like kings, drank like fish, swam like mermaids and partied like rock stars.  Here are a few pictures around the property.

Then the wedding! The wedding! It was phenomenal! Let me just break it down for you guys. Lily, the bride, is Colombian, while Frank, the groom, is Dominican. If you know anything about these cultures, you know they know how to party! The two families get along great as do all of their friends.

The ceremony was lovely. And I was so happy for their union. As far as how I felt – from a soon to be divorced person – I felt great. I love these two together and felt nothing but pride and happiness for them. I carefully listened to the vows, though, and soaked them in. If I ever take those vows again, they will be words I carefully live and love by. I will never again have anyone tell me I neglected them after I had children. (Yes, I’m still sensitive about that!)

The wedding had everyone dancing like crazy! Old, young… it didn’t matter! You were going to shake your tail feathers til it hurt. The Colombians felt it their duty to pass out shots of Aguardiente throughout the night. (This stuff gives you hair on your chest. No joke.) And the Domincians were such a hospitable bunch.

We then went to the disco and casino and didn’t get back to our rooms til 4:30 am. That’s a late night for Mama Athena! (I won $40 playing roulette, yeah!)

I woke up the next morning with sore feet, neck hurting, legs tight, back all screwed up… you name it! Totally an indication of how serious my salsa, reggaeton and hip hop dancing was! (Translation: I’m rusty these days. Dammit.)

Wow. What a restorative weekend. Great quality time with a bunch of my best friends. Sun, beach, pool, eating, dancing, sleeping… doesn’t get better than that!

Oh, and for the record… If anyone ever needs an ego boost, go to Dominican Republic! These guys are lovers by nature and will make you – as well as every other woman there – feel like you are a princess!

Last Week in Rewind – Getting Funky, Dating & Full Moon Parties

I’m a bit behind blogging lately.  I think working, kids, illnesses, trying to maintain a social life and actually dating is starting to catch up to me!  Once I put the kids to bed, I’m so tired I can’t even keep my eyes open to be able to jump on a computer.

Here’s my attempt at catching you all up on the highlights of last week.  It was a fun week. 🙂

Wednesday Captain asked me out to dinner and drove his little cute bum up to see me.  I was a little bit worried that maybe the second date wouldn’t go quite as perfectly as the first one.

Well, no sophomore slumps here!  First thing he said when he picked me up was “Damn, I forgot just how beautiful you were.”  (Pick me up off the floor, y’all.)   That started it all off right!  We had drinks at a bar and then dinner at a gastropub by the name of Barley & Swine.  Great drinks + great food + great conversation + sexy man + fabulous goodbye makeout session = Perfect night for me.  I can’t say enough good things at this point.  I’m enjoying this early dating phase where everything is perfect!

Thursday Grayheart was on travel last weekend for work so my typical “Friday Night Fun” turned into “Thursday Night Fun!”  (Side note… Can’t you kinda already see why my marriage was so challenging with his travel?)

My girlfriend, Jazz, and I decided to spend our night of fun and debauchery at a club in Little Havana (in Miami) known as “Hoy Como Ayer.”  They had a live band called “Spam All Stars” that plays a mean Afro-Cuban/Latin funk infused with hip hop and salsa.  Totally awesome!  It was my first time seeing them and they rock!  We danced and had a blast.

Saturday – I had my THIRD date with Captain.  This time I went to the Keys to visit him.  He’d been wanting to take me to something called a “Full Moon Party” that occurs once a month.  Luck had it that it fell this particular weekend. He had a most romantic evening planned for us…

A few bottles of Moët & Chandon and fruit were waiting for me when I arrived.  We drank our bubbly while sitting on his deck overlooking the water.  He then took us to our dinner reservation at a fabulous restaurant where we shared food and great stories.  The next stop was the Full Moon Party on the beach.  VIP treatment, fireworks, performers, drinks, dancing… it was SO much fun!  I, also, met all his best friends.  We all got along really well and you can rest assured that I wiggled my bottom to show off that I was an old pro on the dance floor.

So, how did we end the night, you ask?  More champagne and a most memorable evening at his house.  Screw my year of celibacy.  OH. MY. GAWD.  HOW. DID. I. GET. SO. LUCKY?

I’m still in a haze over last week.   It was just ah-mazing.  Seriously.  Pinch me, I’m dreaming.

Last Week’s Mantra:  I am on such a high right now.  ENJOY THE NOW!!!

Friday Night Fun – Movies & Dancing

Last Friday, I went to the movies and then out dancing.  It was a fun night, chill, nothing crazy.

I went with several girlfriends to see “Fifty Shades of Grey” which felt like it an adventure!  The movie was fine (I’m not a huge fan of who they picked as Christian Grey) but the most fun about the experience was watching it with a bunch of women that read the book.  People were cheering and “oohing” and “ahhing” at certain scenes or quotes… and the movie was much funnier than I expected!  Overall, it was worth seeing but I think I saw waaaaay too much of Dakota Johnson’s nipples (and the infamous bush, of course). LOL!

I met up with another set of friends for our regular Friday night dancing outing and… I’m over it.  I had fun but I’m tired of our regular place.  I feel like I know the DJ’s set and am about to ask him if I can fill in for him to damn switch it up!  Plus, no cute guys.  You would think, statistically speaking, this would be a great night to pick up some single honies the night before Valentine’s but it seems that only the annoying, unattractive ones followed that line of thought!

Overall, fun night but nothing worth making a big deal about.  So, it’s time to switch it up this coming weekend…

Friday Night Fun – Bar Hopping

Friday nights are my nights!  Grayheart stays with the kids and I go out with my girlfriends.

This past Friday I went bar hopping with my friend, Jazz.  We hit 5 different bars/restaurants in three different parts of town!  (It’s becoming sport for me these days, it seems.)  We ended up at the same club we’ve been going out to for the last month!  It’s nice to have that spot you can just go back to for dancing and laughs but it’s starting to get old real quick.

We danced and came across a whole bunch of characters there.  (What is up with Miami?! There seem to be no men I like!)  I really don’t mean to sound like a snob but I have not found anyone I’m attracted to!  I know I’m not going to find Mr. Perfect at a bar or club but, damn, can I get a hot guy somewhere?

Y’all know I love to dance.  I’ll shake, shimmy, twerk, flip it and reverse it, salsa, wind up… you name it.  But I don’t often like to dance with others.  I like to dance with my girlfriends.  I don’t want to be grinded up on.  My body, my space.  And I hate being thrown off rhythm by guys that just can’t dance.  (You cannot slow dance to Usher’s latest song.  Just no.)   So I was kind of being a biznitch by not accepting requests to dance.  (No, I will not dance with you for the fricking twentieth time!)   And I nicely stepped away from those that were trying to get too close.  (Does a face palm count as kind?)  I was losing my patience with the crowd.

Then, all of a sudden… guess who popped in?  The only guy I’ve thought was attractive and sexy and had swagger in all these nights I’ve gone out!  Whisky!  He said hello, gave me a kiss on the cheek, commented he saw me walking by his bar earlier this evening, gave me an appreciative once over and then he continued on with his buds to get drinks.  I danced and then was going to two step my way near him only to then have some hoochie mama swoop right in and latch onto him!  She was not cute but, man, was she ALL over him!  Grinding, going up and down, pressing on him… basically, she was going to give him anything he wanted that night.  He looked over a few times while I danced but I was NOT going to chase him.  It did piss me off, though.  I was hoping this would be my opportunity to have a distraction from my complicated life.  I won’t chase a man so I left shortly thereafter and did not say goodbye.

What did I get out of the night?  Well, I ate too many fried appetizers, had a bad glass of wine and then proceeded to have a stomach ache. Oh and the feeling of being kinda dissed by that punk, Whisky.  (I guess I deserved it considering I was not Ms. Congeniality there.)

Then I got home only to find Grayheart still awake.  I forgot he thought I went on a date!  I’d worn a dress with a belt and had taken the belt off in the car since it was bothering me on my drive home.  He didn’t say anything but I know he noticed the missing accessory.  Not sure why he was up at 2:30 am but he was on the computer.  Ain’t nobody got time for that so I showered and went to bed.

Pretty uneventful night.  This is what single life is going to be like?  Lawd, help me!

Night Out – Baby Steps

Friday night I went out with Jazz and Cat and my other cousin, Daisy.  It was Daisy’s husband’s birthday.  We went to a wine bar and then out dancing.  (I’ve graduated, y’all, from crying each time I go out!)  A large group of their friends went out that night and, of course, there was a cutie there… Timberland.  Tall, cute and smart.  He made his interest known and didn’t leave my side once we made it to the club that night.

I danced the night away and he was incredibly polite and sweet. Offered me anything I needed and was respectful of my space.  But there was no magnetic pull.  Had I drank that night, I probably would’ve been more “open” but I just wasn’t feeling it.  I’m not looking for a relationship but I certainly don’t want to waste my first kiss post-separation on someone my gauge reads “lukewarm” about.  Handsome or not, chemistry is something you can’t force.

After dancing, we all went to Denny’s for breakfast and had a fabulous time talking and laughing.  (He ate some of my pancakes, which strangely felt intimate.)  Once we headed back to our cars, I bolted.  I didn’t want him to ask me for my phone number.  I just don’t need the distraction right now.  I went home knowing that I had a great night and really enjoyed the attention from another man but that I’m not ready for anything more than that.  Baby steps…

Art Basel Graffiti Image - Rap Artist Trina

Art Basel Graffiti Image – Rap Artist Trina

Last night started off great. Had a wonderful sushi dinner with two of my best friends and then we headed to an Art Basel party. The scene was hip and artsy with lots of Caribbean flavor. And then there’s me in a skin tight little black dress that had a keyhole cutout to show off cleavage (in which, right before I left, my daughter asked me why I had a hole in the dress). I looked out of place and like I was trying too hard. Then I realized just how intimidated I was by the scene. I mean, earlier that day I had considered making out with a hot guy if the opportunity presented itself. Now? Not so much. The thought of another man touching or being intimate with me was repulsive. And going through the whole dating game just freaked me the hell out. All these thoughts running through my mind at the same time cause me to start tearing up so I disappeared on my friends to go control the waterworks that were coming. What the hell changed? I was so confident earlier in the day and then my confidence fell somewhere to the floor. Fear took over and loneliness was making its way in. How could this happen when I was surrounded by music and numerous people? I was trying too hard too fast. My friends found me and talked me back to reality. It was going to be a long road and I was going to have to accept it one way or another. And soon enough I won’t feel like such a fish out of water. This is all still part of finding me. With those thoughts and my friends by my side, I danced the rest of the night with them and enjoyed myself. ❤️

That night’s mantra: With friends and family, I will get through anything!
